U13 LEAGUE - WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Young Athletes League

30th July 2006

Sussex Golden Vest’s for Athletes

Eastbourne Rovers are very proud of eight of their under 13’s selected to represent Sussex at the South of England Inter-Counties match at Kings Meadow track at Kingston. The Sussex youngsters had one of the best ever results finishing fourth in both the boys and girls matches. Overall they came third with 530 pts behind Surrey who won with 570pts and Essex in second place with 547pts.

In total 11 Counties took part. Sprint events were run as two races and the times amalgamated to calculate the winner and allocate points.

Sophie Rodger gave a fantastic performance winning her round of the 70m Hurdles with a new PB of 11.82sec. Sophie then went on to take a second win and further PB for an impressive 200m sprint in 27.23sec. Overall Sophie was 3rd in both events and will surely end up on the National Ranking list at the end of the season.

Amy Beeden continues to prove she is a very talented young athlete. Still only at primary school and remaining in the u13’s next year, it will be very interesting to see how she improves the following performance’s next season. Amy came 4th in the A string Long Jump and was 5th overall with her leap of 4m53. Amy won her round of the 100m sprint and her time of 13.65sec placed her 6th overall against the best in the South of England and probably all a year older than her.

Vicky Platt continues to prove her all round talent selected for both the Shot and the relay. Vicky gave sound performances putting the Shot 7m95 placing her 6th in the B string and 11th overall. Vicky ran a guest non scoring 100m to win in 13.87sec.

Jade Rose normally runs 1000 or 1200m in local events but at Inter-County level had to move up to 1500m. Jade placed herself in the middle of the pack and moved round safely in this getting the feel of this distance and quality in the race. On the final lap coming out of the bend Jade found plenty of strength and sprinted down the home straight overtaking two athletes to finish in 6th place for the B string in 5.33.5min.

Two more of the athletes selected from Eastbourne are also only primary school age and again will still be u13’s next year but have already had the honour of competing for Sussex. Katy Lambert selected for High Jump finished in 8th place clearing 1m30. Beth Killey threw the Javelin for the B string spearing 16m40 for 5th place.

Jono Ketley is without doubt another very talented athlete who was selected for both the High Jump and 1500m. Unfortunately Jono was unwell, after clearing 1m35 in the High Jump Jono was not fit enough to take on the 1500m. This was a terrible shame especially after he had won Gold for the High Jump at the Independent Schools Championships at Birmingham and took the Bronze for his fantastic run in the 1500m in only 4.42.0min.

Sussex knew they had a girls relay team capable of winning. With Vicky Platt, Amy Beeden and Sophie Rodgers from Eastbourne who already hold the u13 league and Championship relay records. Joined by Emily Brown from Horsham there was little doubt this would be the winning team. The Eastbourne girls stuck to the same order, Vicky Platt blasted off on the first leg. Amy Beeden flew up the back straight and for once she was not way out in front but actually had some one to chase. Amy had moved into a good position for the change over to Sophie Rodger who cruised round the top bend at terrific speed and passed the baton to Emily just ahead of the other teams. Emily flew down the home straight fighting for first place and triumphantly crossed the line in only 53.14sec for a New County Record.

Jake Giles chosen for his immense sprinting achievements prior to the relay ran a guest non scoring 100m to finish in 2nd place in 13.53sec. Then at the end of the day Jake lined with the other 3 fastest sprinters in Sussex ready for the relay. After watching the girls victory the boys were determined to win. Jake ran 2nd leg and at this stage they were still in with a chance, the next baton change was fine and in the home straight Sussex were in the lead and secured their win when the baton safely crossed the line in only 52.12sec for another New County Record.

U13s LEAGUE

This is a special League for Young Athletes, children in school years 6 and 7. We have three evenings together where U13 athletes get a chance to compete against children from other clubs who are also new to athletics. The great thing is everyone gets a point for their team, even if you come last. We compete against East Sussex Clubs for a Cup and it's all good fun. In September we move onto a day's competition at Crawley, this is the Final when teams from West Sussex join us - and there is a prize to be won.

PARTY TIME

At the end of the summer season there is a presentation of awards and trophies for the U13 team followed by a disco. A great evening for our young athletes and their parents to feel proud of their achievements!

Your Questions...

What if there are too many who want to join?
We automatically enter 2 sets of children - an A & B team. We are then allowed to enter an extra set of children. These are called the non-scoring events. It does not matter if you are in the A team, B team, or non-scoring - the League is there so every child gets a chance to come along and have a go.

What events will I do?
You may do 2 events plus a relay. It as a good opportunity to try out different events you have been doing on training nights or you can do something completely different. Here are the events:

75m and 100m Sprints

600m and 1000 Middle Distance

High Jump and Long Jump

Discus, Javelin and Shot Putt

75m Hurdles and 4x100 Relay

How do I get there?
Luckily this year two of our meetings are at home. When e=we go to Lewes or Crawley it is hoped there will be enough parents coming to watch that we can all go with our family, as everyone is welcome. This saves the cost of hiring a minibus, but don't worry if Mum or Dad can't take you, someone will always give you a lift.

What does it cost and what do I need?
No individual cost as the Club pays for the team to join the League. To compete you have to wear a Club vest (£13.50 from the Club). If you cannot afford one we do have a few spares which must be returned after your last event. It is a good idea to buy your own vest as then you have it for all the season or for as long as it fits.

What do I need to bring with me?
Warm clothing as you never know what British weather will do. A packed meal and plenty of drinks - bottled water is good. Avoid fizzy drinks and too many sweets.

Do I need spikes?
Only if you have a pair. As far as I am aware there is only one shop in Eastbourne who sell them. The best place to go is the Jog Shop in Brighton, but you do not need them, unless Mum or Dad are happy to treat you to a pair.

For further information speak to Neil Maxwell or Ed Dennis for the boys team, and Christine Dolan or Elaine Leckie for the girls team on Club training evenings.
