YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE

U13s LEAGUE

 6th May 2007

Second Place for Young Athletes

Rovers are disappointed at having to settle on 2nd place at the Young Athletes match at Hastings on 6th May. If the u17’s top performers had of been able to compete Eastbourne could of walked the match. Playing second best to football, family celebrations and a host of injuries cost Rovers the match and possibly promotion to the premiership at the very start of the season.

Under the circumstances the slimmer team and array of new athletes did exceptionally well to score enough points narrowly missing winning the match.

Male best performances came from the u15’s age group. Newcomer Tim Pitson won all three of his field events ranking up National performances with his fantastic throws of 30.88m in the Discus,11.66m in the Shot and 37.24m in the Javelin. Joe Morris took two PB’s in the B String winning the Shot with 10m dead and spearing his Javelin 29.57m.

Ed Kinch ran two breath taking races winning both the 400 and 800m in 58.1sec and 2.11.9min. Jake Giles moved up a gear as well as an age group in both sprints with great new PB’s of 12.9 sec for the 100m and 25.3 for the 200m.

Laurence Ackary successfully tried two new events winning the A string Hammer with 16.22m and then the B string 400m in 64.1min. David Cobb made full use of what he had learnt in his winter training sessions with a PB in the 1500m of 5.05.6min.

Will Bettles joined the Rovers at the end of last season and has proved he could well be a talent of the future winning the A String Long jump with 4.82m.

Dan CharltonSadly Jono Ketley fell and suffered an injury at the High Jump and had to be rushed to hospital. Earlier in the day Jono claimed a PB in the B sting 800m with 2.21.4min.

The u17’s team welcomed Michael Soledolu who notched up 12.8 in the 100m and 26.0 in the 200m.

Dan Charlton excelled bravely taking on the 400m Hurdles and finishing with a very respectable time of 67.5sec. Dan went on to achieve a second PB Pole Vaulting 2.70m for an A string win. Mathew Wentworth vaulted 2.60m to win the B string and then went on to claim 3 points for 2nd place in the A string Javelin.

Ryan Norcross handled the transitions from u15’s to u17’s but was up against tough competition from London in his 100 and 200m sprints but leapt 4.76m for 3rd place in the Long Jump.

Josh Zahangir tried a new distance and handled the two laps of the track well running 800m in 2.25.9min. Josh went on to take third place in the triple Jump with 9.31m.

Adam Berramou and Luke CroftThe u13’s boys had several new stars. Adam Berramou had only one training session for the High Jump and in his first ever competition won the A string clearing 1.25m. T-Jay Platt took 2nd place in the A string Shot with a putt of 6.70m. Luke Croft ran his first ever 200m in a reasonable time of 31.8sec and the 1500m in 5.46.9min. Kenny West proved he likes a challenge running a very determined first race for the club completing the 800m in 2.56.7min.

Two boys enjoying their second year in the u13’s both gained great new PB’s. Alex Voss Hillier won the A string 200m in 28.8sec and came 2nd in the 100m with 14.2sec. Joe Russell came 2nd in the A string 800m in a mere 2.33.0min.

The end of the day was great fun for Billy Payne, Eddie Dodd, David Cobb and Laurence Ackary who are at last old enough to run a 4x400 relay. This proved to be most successful they were the only u15 team entered and got the opportunity to run with the u17’s boys bringing the baton home in 4.55.5min.

The Club’s strength in the younger age groups was not enough to pull them through to a victory.

With so few u17’s available the result was far better than expected thanks to the effort put in by the young athletes who did attend.

Sweet Victory for Young Athletes

Congratulations to Eastbourne’s Young athletes who had the sweetest
of Victory’s at the u13’s Final held at the new Crawley K2 track.

Amy Beeden set the standard leaping a massive 4.70m on her first jump breaking the league record set back in 1999. This has been a superb season for the Rovers u13’s girls who now hold 5 of the 11 records. Amala Onuora took the 150m back in 1998 with 19.8sec. At the start of this season Chloe Cook added her name to the list running the1000m in 3.08.9min. Sophie Rodger equalled the 70m Hurdle time of 11.9sec. Vicky Platt, Amy Beeden Sophie and Joanna Morgan broke the 4x100 relay record not once, but twice which now stands at 54.0sec dead. Rovers had feared the competition would be tough with all 11 Sussex Clubs taking part.  Horsham were already the winners of the West Sussex Trophy they knew that they would be their strongest opponents. Amy had magically won the A string Long Jump and Joanna Morgan won the B giving the team the maximum 22 points for the first event. From there on Eastbourne led all the way. This year’s u13’s have become a highly tuned team coached by Barry Morris and Andy Payne who knew their young athletes had the talent to win the Games. Athletes joining later in the season have been coached by Annie Murray and they provided the superb support which claimed the Shield for the first time since the games started 15 years ago.

Jono Ketley tried another new distance and mastered the pace well to complete the 600m in 1.46.4min for third place. Billy Payne gave an outstanding performance winning his 1000m with a PB of 3.23.1min. The newest member of the team Will Bettles certainly impressed taking 3rd place in the A string Long Jump leaping 4m18. Young Jonathan Kenyon finished in 5th position for the B string but again notched up a new PB of 3m61.

James Wardle is only a year 6 student but showed great potential launching the Javelin 25m84 for 5th place in the A string. Elliott Beesley won the B string and a PB with a tremendous throe of 25m21. Mathew Ladham took 3rd place in the B string Discus with a PB of 15m56 in only his second competition.

Jade Rose caused great excitement in the 1000m by running in the middle of the pack to start and then moving up to 4th position as they came into the home straight Jade changed gear and accelerated passed the two athletes in front to finish in 2nd place with a new PB of 3.24.5min.

Rachel Noel filled for the regular High Jumper who was away on holiday and gave a very encouraging performance clearing 1m15 for 4th place in the B string.

On the field Vicky Platt won the Shot when putting a great PB of 8m41 which could give her a National ranking at the end of the season. Rosie Sharpe and Naomi Dowse who are both only in year 6 proved they have terrific potential as throwers. Rosie launched her Javelin to claim 3rd place in the A string with a PB of 18m12 and then took 2nd place in the B string Discus hurling 14m06. Naomi took 4th place in the A string Discus with 14m34 and 3rd place in the B string Javelin marking the ground at 15m03.

Even at the final the u13’s league hosts non scoring events so all young athletes get the opportunity to compete. The biggest improvement of the day came from Ben Farley who cut over 10 sec off his 600m now running under 2 min in 1.58.4

Fortunately most of the usual team were available to compete and even though the conditions were not suitable for PB they claimed enough 1st and 2nd places to earn adequate point for their clear win.
