A small contingent of Eastbourne rovers Athletes travelled to Mile End to compete in the Youth Development League (YDL).
Senior James Jewell was first on the track and ran a steady first 3 laps of his 1500m before he changed gear and overtook the field to come 1st in 4m09.9. He then decided to kick for home earlier in the 800m so was a clear winner in a personal best of 2m00.09. Ben Brown took on the ‘B’ string runners and again sprinted for home in 2m13.09.
Three of the U17 middle distance athletes decided to tackle the 1500m steeplechase for the first time. Ilya Korchev led from the start and pushed himself to a fantastic win in 4m36.48 which is a qualifying time for the English Schools championships. Fintan Pearce came 2nd in the ‘B’ string with 4m58.48 and Dermot O’Rourke came 2nd in his 800m in 2m15.5 before walking back onto the track to complete the steeplechase.
U17 Adam Churchyard faced some good competition in his throwing events. In the discus he threw consistently well to hurl out the winning throw of 29m53 which is a personal best followed by a 2nd spot in the javelin with 30m14.
Aoife Cherrill tested out her new blocks with great success in her 200m as she stormed through for a personal best in 28.52 giving her second place. Sophie Hutchison came 3rd in her 400m and then tackled an 800m for the first time for another 3rd place.
Zoe Wright was 4th in her 100m in another personal best of 13.5 continuing her stream of personal bets this month. Training partner Ellen Bregazzi finished strongly in her sprints for 3rd in the 200m and 5th in the 100m.
Ellen set the 4x100m relay off to a good start followed by Aoife on the 2nd leg and Sophie on the final bend. The Lewes team Sussex athletes brought the team across the line in 4th, to complete a successful afternoon of athletics.
