Impressive performances came from the Eastbourne Rovers young athletes when they competed in the Sussex Cross Country Main Championships at Beckenham Place Park, Beckenham on Saturday 28th January.
This event attracts athletes from far and wide and the standard is exceptionally high but this did not deter the young Eastbourne Rover athletes putting in some excellent performances.
Fin Lumber – Fry was the highest placed from Eastbourne positioning 6th in the 3 km under 13’s race. Sussex County Champion Freda Pearce ran a gutsy race picking her way through the field to clinch 10th. Sussex Schools Champion Daisy Connor claimed 21st. In the under 15’s race Ilya Korchev had a storming run over the 4 km distance placing a promising 13th. Sussex Schools champion Eleanor Strevens continued her fine spell of form in the under 17 girls race placing 29th with teammate Ellie Mclean a credible 40th.
Coach Chris Voice said ‘The Eastbourne athletes performed well amongst the tough competition at Beckenham Park. This event prepares them well for some of the high-level events coming up such as the UK Intercounties in Loughborough on 11th March and the National Schools in Nottingham on 18th March where many of them have been selected to represent Sussex. The results are very encouraging as some of the athletes have another year in their age groups to come’
