Scottish Indoor Open Combined Events

The annual Scottish Open indoor Combined Events took place at the Internationally acclaimed Arena in Glasgow at the weekend and Brian Slaughter was there to make use of the fantastic facilities and great officials of the championships. Brian was listed for the Masters Heptathlon of seven events of two days with one thing on his mind of another British record in his new age group. Having been so cold lately he had been limited on speed work for the vent but with his main focus of the World Masters Indoor Championships in Torun Poland at the end of May this was another steeping stone towards that goal. The first day started very much as targeted and predicted with a solid 60m performance.  Next up was the Shot Putt another solid event which he duly won with 10.36m.  The pole vault can always be a great leveller event but Brian relying on borrowed poles cleared his heights first time all the way up to his exit point. The final event of day one was the Long Jump and with his opening jump was happy with the distance despite taking off just before the measuring board point.  This set him up well ready for the second of three jumps with adjustments made as necessary and delivered his best jump of the day exceeding his own prediction. This finished day one very nicely with a 400 point lead over his nearest rival with 2628 points. He already knew that a great display in the opening event of day two the 60H hurdles could bring him the British Record mark after five of the first seven events. The warm area on day two was very busy and this can sometime present it’s own issues especially for events like hurdles so some adjustments were made in preparation.  Always the competitor the race it’s self was spot on of what Brian needed as he ran four hundreds quicker than he needed but in doing so surpassed the current age group record.  Now it was a question of building on the targets set with the High Jump as he cleared 6cm higher than current form would suggest with a very useful 679 points for the effort. The final event brought a similar total of 674 points with a solid 1000m run to amass 4728 points in total for overall victory and the British Record. Revisiting planning will take place this week before deciding the final build up to the World Championships.
